Wood slab tables are of course stunning. The best part is that they can literally come in any size, shape or color. Wood is so versatile and when dealing with wood slabs or wood planks, you really have an opportunity to go beyond what you can get from mass-produced. A round wood table, a live edge wood table, or a rectangular slab table are all within the realm of possibility when dealing with a wood slab company.
What to Look For When Buying a Round Wood Table
When buying any wood or wood slab table you should always make sure you know what you’re looking for and you know what questions to ask. Here is a checklist to help get you started.
- Has the table been dried? If so, how? This is critical, especially if dealing with a round wood table. The manner in which the wood slab is dried can mean the difference between a table that twists and even cracks to one that maintains its integrity. Now certainly, this is not to say that a properly dried slab will not have some movement. It’s simply the nature of wood. But if dried with a high frequency vacuum kiln, such as the one we have, there is less of a chance of major twisting and checking. An air dried piece is fine, but how long has it been drying? If not long enough, there could still be way too much moisture in the wood slab.
- What Type of Base Construction Does it Have? When dealing with wood slabs, the base is especially crucial. Even wood coffee table slabs can way anywhere from 200-400 pounds depending on thickness and wood species. If the base is flimsy, it may not properly support the weight. Or, it could wobble. No one likes a wobbly table. Also, take note of how the base is attached to the slab table top. Making sure it is secured is very important.
- What does the finish consist of? There are so many different finishes and finish applications in the world of wood slabs that it can become dizzying. So you need to know your purpose. Meaning, will the wood slab table get a lot of wear and tear. Do you want to be able to do whatever you want and have the resulting marks be a part of the patina? Would you like more of a glossy finish on your round wood table? Really think about how you’d like the slab table to function and pick a finish that works with your needs.
