Wood table finishes can certainly vary: Everything from all natural oil finishes that are organic and eco-friendly to polyurethane to more heavy duty type finishes that can withstand outdoor elements. At Woodsman Design Studio, we utilize a number of different finishing techniques and applications. It’s about understanding what our Buffalo NY customers want and then working with them to achieve their dream wood slab piece.
While we could write endlessly on the different wood slab finishing options available, we thought we’d offer quick primer on some of the more popular finishes that you’ll find on wood tables.
-
Oils. Oil finishes such and tung and linseed oil are becoming increasing popular with our Buffalo and New York based customers. Perhaps this is because this type of finish really allows you to see the inherent beauty of the wood slab. Whether a more standard wood design or a live edge slab, the oils penetrate the fibers of the wood and enhance the richness and warmth of the grain. Plus they’re less expensive than some of the more involved finishing applications.
-
Polyurethane. Definitely a durable finish, polyurethane on a wood slab table top is often a popular option. Again, it holds up; plus depending on the type of poly you use, you can really make the wood pop while still ensuring that it maintains its natural look and feel.
-
Epoxy. Especially with outdoor slab tables, we often use a specialized epoxy coating, not unlike what they use on cars. With the wood slab being exposed to water and the elements, you really need an intense level of protection to help keep the wood from fading and twisting.
